Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic has said that Chelsea striker Fernando Torres should not be blamed for the troubles Chelsea have been having this season.
Chelsea recently sacked their manager Andre Villas-Boas after the Portuguese manager failed to live up to the expectations. He was sacked after only 257 days into the ‘project’– the main aim of which was to bring Fernando Torres back into the reckoning. Ever since his £ 50 million move to the London club Chelsea, Torres has been extremely poor. Reflecting his poor form, he was recently dropped from the Spain squad and is also a major doubt to travel to the Euro 2012.
However, Branislav Ivanovic has said that Fernando Torres is not the reason for the troubles Chelsea have been facing this season. Fernando Torres was a starter for Chelsea only in the recent few matches when Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba was away on international duty.
Despite having a regular run out of the team, Fernando Torres failed to find the back of the net. He has now not scored since hitting the back of the net back in October. People at the club are lost for words when it comes to the reasons for his poor form.
“Football is a team sport and this season all of us at Chelsea have been very bad. We are all guilty because we have all performed below our level. We are all to blame, not just one player. Torres is always in the front row for critics. He plays in attack and should be scoring goals, everybody knows that, but we have played many games without him and lost anyway,” the defender told Sportske.
Fernando Torres is expected to get some opportunities in the first team following the arrival of assistant manager Roberto di Matteo into the hot seat. Having been dropped from the last Spain squad because of his lack of opportunities for Chelsea, now probably isn’t the time to stick a bet on Euro 2012 in-play that Fernando Torres will finish as the tournament’s top scorer – even if we believe that will be the case!
