Jose Mourinho fancies David de Gea to stay with Manchester United

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has backed David de Gea to stay with the club for the long-term despite the ongoing speculation regarding his future. The Spain international has endured a mixed campaign for club and country but he has enjoyed a good run recently with back-to-back clean sheets against Crystal Palace and Young Boys.

Speaking in a post-match press conference, Mourinho highlighted that De Gea is perhaps the sole player in the world-class bracket for them and hinted that the shot-stopper may not have any issues in extending his contract with the club, he said: “He’s a world-class player. The best goalkeeper in the world and – if our ambitions are to be a big club, a winning club – you need the best goalkeeper in the world and also some other players who are the best in the world. In this case we have the best goalkeeper, and I know he wants to stay, I know his agent is happy to do what the player wants and I also know the board wants him to stay and they are working on that. “Hopefully sooner or later they arrive into good conclusions.”

De Gea has been hugely influential towards United’s performances over the past few seasons and that has come about with the team possessing a rather vulnerable defence. Nonetheless, the Spaniard have always indicated that he is content with his stay with the Mancunian giants and hopefully, the club can find a breakthrough over an extension during the forthcoming weeks.

The former Atletico Madrid graduate currently has just seven months remaining on his contract but United have the luxury of an extension clause through which they can extend the deal for another season. Should De Gea sign a new contract, he would most likely become one of the highest-paid players in the Premier League alongside the likes of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.
