ETO’O GETS NODS

Since the arrival of Samuel Eto’o, manager José Mourinho has preferred to using the Cameroon international up front for the likes of Demba Ba and Fernando Torres. The £ 50 million striker, Fernando Torres, has said that he is not a backup to Eto’o and he feels that there is a lot of competition for places at Chelsea. Torres has been a shadow of his former self since moving to West London. He has managed to score only a handful of goals, but he indeed was the top scorer at the club in the successful Europa league campaign last season.

Torres scored 23 goals in all competitions for the club. Chelsea tried a lot to bring Manchester United hitman Wayne Rooney in the summer without any success. Instead, they brought in Eto’o on a free transfer from Anzhi Makhachkala. This transfer was widely perceived as a lack of faith in Torres. It has proven to be the case in recent weeks, as the Spaniard has found very little first-team opportunities. However, he remains as the only Chelsea striker to have found the back of the net this season.

Eto’o and Ba have not scored in several attempts, but Mourinho has said that goals will come from his expensively assembled team.

“We have great strikers and all of us are going to score goals. It’s nice to have this competition. The season is going to be long like the last one. There’ll be time for all of us to play in important games and score some goals. The main thing is we keep winning. We are in the top four in the Premier League and have moved one step forward in the [League] Cup. We’re all fighting to be in the line-up, to be in the squad,” said Torres ahead of the match with Tottenham.
