Spain recently managed a quite stunning 10-0 win over Tahiti in the Confederations cup, which could possibly be one of the highest ever margin of victory in a major tournament. Chelsea striker Fernando Torres, who has struggled for form continuously in the last three years, managed to write himself in the history books by scoring four goals in the match. In doing so, Torres has a great opportunity of winning the Golden Boot at the tournament ahead of the likes of Neymar and Fred, who has been doing extremely well with the Brazilian squad so far.
Despite managing to control Spain for most of the early stages, Tahiti showed that there are no match for the team that has just won the European championship and the World Cup. They were soundly beaten 10-0 at the end, but striker Torres has said that the Spanish players were showing a lot of respect towards Tahiti. The 29-year-old himself scored four goals, which have taken his tally for this competition to five goals. Since he has a significantly better assists record than the likes of Fred and Neymar, he stands a great chance to win this award.
David Villa, Juan Mata, and David Silva were the other scorers for Spain on the night.
“Often inferior teams look to break up the game and get aggressive, they play without spirit or hope. Standards aside, Tahiti showed a great example of how to go about playing football. We have tried to show them respect in every sense. We tried to play well, to play simple football, and to score goals and these goals will be important for the next stage,” said Torres. The future of the Spaniard at Chelsea looks doubtful after manager Mourinho has been looking at other options like Edinson Cavani in the last few weeks.
